Italy and Europe must support Pier Luigi Bersani’s proposals to end Italy’s deadlock

Following the Italian parliamentary elections which ended on Monday, there is no clear majority in the Senate for either party. The Partito Democratico (PD), whose MEPs are affiliated to the S&D Group, gained the majority in the lower house. Pier Luigi Bersani of the PD has announced that he will seek support from senators on progressive reforms for the country.

Hannes Swoboda, the president of the S&D Group in the European Parliament, gave his full support to Pier Luigi Bersani:

„The election outcome in Italy is the people’s response to both the single-minded austerity policy Europe has imposed and the stiffened political structures in the country. Italy’s political system needs reforming and I fully support Pier Luigi Bersani’s proposal to improve crucial elements of the political structure. These include the costs of politics, reform of electoral law, strong measures on corruption and social policy, fighting rising poverty and creating jobs and opportunities.

„Pier Luigi Bersani must now have the opportunity to put forward proposals for reform and I sincerely hope that he will be joined and supported by those who were elected to bring change and new political movement to Italy.

„As regards Europe, we must now not succumb to talk of panic and chaos but reassess the EU’s position. Harsh austerity and worsening living standards and opportunities for people played a key role in this election and continue to have an impact on people across Europe.

„Italy now has the possibility of breaking the political stalemate in Italy, as well as in Europe. This is a chance to move forward, listen to people’s concerns and deliver progressive policies to bring more fairness for everyone.“

Italien und Europa müssen Pier Luigi Bersanis Vorschläge unterstützen, um Italien aus der Sackgasse zu führen

Nach den Parlamentswahlen in Italien hat keine Partei eine klare Mehrheit im Senat. Die Partito Democratico (PD), deren Abgeordnete der Sozialdemokratischen Fraktion im Europäischen Parlament angehören, erreichte die Mehrheit im Unterhaus. Pier Luigi Bersani (PD) hat angekündigt, um die Unterstützung der Senatoren für progressive Reformen für das Land werben zu wollen.

Hannes Swoboda, Vorsitzender der S&D Fraktion im Europaparlament, sagte Pier Luigi Bersani seine volle Unterstützung zu:
„Das Wahlergebnis in Italien ist die Antwort der Menschen zum einen auf die einseitige Sparpolitik, die Europa ihnen aufgezwungen hat, und zum anderen auf die verkrusteten politischen Strukturen im Land selbst. Italiens politisches System muss reformiert werden, und ich unterstütze voll und ganz die Vorschläge von Pier Luigi Bersani zur Verbesserung entscheidender Elemente der politischen Strukturen. Dazu zählen die Kosten der Politik, die Reform des Wahlrechts, entschiedene Maßnahmen gegen Korruption und zugunsten der Sozialpolitik, die Bekämpfung der zunehmenden Armut und die Schaffung von Beschäftigung und Chancen.
Pier Luigi Bersani muss nun die Gelegenheit erhalten, Reformvorschläge vorzulegen. Ich hoffe aufrichtig, dass ihm dabei jene zur Seite stehen werden, die gewählt worden sind, um Italien Veränderung und neuen politischen Schwung zu bringen.
Was Europa betrifft, dürfen wir uns jetzt nicht dem Gerede von Panik und Chaos beugen, sondern wir müssen die Position der EU überprüfen. Die harte Sparpolitik und die schlechter werdenden Lebensbedingungen und Chancen für die Bürger haben bei dieser Wahl eine wichtige Rolle gespielt und wirken sich auch weiterhin auf die Menschen in ganz Europa aus.
Italien hat nun die Möglichkeit, den politischen Stillstand sowohl im eigenen Land als auch in Europa zu überwinden. Das ist eine Chance, vorwärts zu gehen, auf die Sorgen der Menschen zu hören und progressive Politik zu machen, um mehr Gerechtigkeit für alle zu bringen.“
