Swoboda warns Orbán: „No EU support for disempowering the Constitutional Court“
The Hungarian parliament has begun debating a new amendment to the Hungarian Constitution, submitted by the ruling Fidesz party, which aims at significantly reducing the powers of the Constitutional Court.
Hannes Swoboda, President of the S&D Group, condemned the amendment:
„Victor Orbán should not mistake his recent meetings in Brussels and with the Council of Europe as encouragement for his negative, dangerous policies.
„The latest Fidesz amendments to the Hungarian Fundamental Law could provoke a collapse of the judiciary, with a disempowered Constitutional Court. It also risks significantly worsening conditions for the most vulnerable people and would breach fundamental European principles of free speech and free media.
„We ask the European Commission to closely monitor the developments in Hungary. Changes to the Constitution must not be imposed by a parliamentary majority but must be reached through debate with the opposition and civil society.“
