Swoboda welcomes election win for Lithuanian Social Democrats: A mandate from the people for growth and against unfair austerity

The Lithuanian Social Democratic Party Lietuvos socialdemokratų partija (LSDP) has received strong backing from the Lithuanian people in the second round of parliamentary elections, placing them as first party with a total of 38 seats in the 140-seat parliament.

Hannes Swoboda, President of the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, welcomed the results:
„The elections in Lithuania are a clear signal that the Lithuanian people reject the unjust austerity policies of the previous conservative government and endorse social democratic values and social justice. Algirdas Butkevičius and the LSDP have received a clear mandate to lead Lithuania with policies for growth and employment and overall social fairness.
„I congratulate the LSDP and encourage all parties to work towards a swift agreement on a stable coalition government, for the benefit of Lithuania as well as for its forthcoming accession to the eurozone.“
