S&Ds congratulate new head of Eurogroup, Dutch Finance minister Dijsselbloem

The Group of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament welcomed the appointment of Dutch Socialdemocratic Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem as new head of the Eurogroup, following Jean-Claude Juncker’s decision to step down from the post.

S&D Group President Hannes Swoboda said in reaction to the appointment:

“Jeroen Dijsselbloem is the best candidate for the job, as a committed Socialdemocrat and an able economist and finance minister.

“Sky-high unemployment, stalling growth and economic uncertainty are the problems Jeroen Dijsselbloem will have to solve to achieve a healthier Eurozone, a Eurozone in which growth is the status quo, not recession. Conservative economic policies – which in the past years have consisted of simplistic, cold austerity – have failed to end the Eurozone crisis.“
