Swoboda on Egyptian interim government: „Main task is to organise peaceful, free and fair elections“

Egypt’s interim president, Adly Mansour, has named former finance minister Hazem El-Beblawi as prime minister of the temporary government that will see Egypt through the next months until new elections.

Hannes Swoboda, president of the S&D Group, commented on the appointment: „The military coup that brought down Morsi who failed to listen to and understand the needs of the people, must be followed by swift elections to build a genuine, democratically elected government.

„The main task of the interim leadership is to guarantee that free and fair elections can take place as soon as possible, without any constraints, in order to transfer power to an elected civilian government. It is necessary that the violence, which has caused dozens of deaths in recent days, ceases immediately. The interim government must seek unifying discussions with all political players.“
